CAT | Ann Arbor Poetry Slam
First, for those of you who came out to support Karyna and all the poets at the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Detroit last month, thank you. It was a fantastic night of poetry, even though Karyna didn’t take first.
We have a big night of poetry on April 1, it’s no joke. Our annual semi-finals mark the end of the qualifying season. If you took first or second in any of our slams since last June, you are qualified to compete. The top 6 poets will move on to the finals in May, to decide who will represent Ann Arbor at the National Poetry Slam in Madison this August.
Good Luck, and see you tomorrow night!

Karyna McGlynn is in the WoWPS Finals!!

Now, I know that Karyna is world famous, and she slammed for Austin and Seattle, and she has published a gazillion poems and papers elsewhere; but this year she slams for Ann Arbor, so this is a victory for us!
Karyna is ranked 7th overall after two nights of great poetry at the Women of the World Poetry Slam which places her squarely into the finals going on tonight in Detroit! If you have nothing to do tonight, head down to the Filmore and cheer on our hometown poet! If you have something to do, cancel it and go down there anyway!
In other news, our semi-finals are next month. If you slammed during our regular season, and took first or second, you are qualified to compete in our semifinals. So polish up your poems, it’s the first Tuesday in April!

The Bad Slam was, well, terrible

Terribly good that is. The field was tough for bad poets last night in Ann Arbor. Everyone brought their own flavor of awful to the stage and the audience rewarded them with boos and in some cases begged them to stop.
Some standouts included Mike Moriarty’s “If Saul William’s was a Used Car Salesman” which the crowd decided was too good for the Bad Slam. Victoria’s “Some Guy I met on MySpace” poem made it into final consideration with it’s stunning examination of the MySpace stalker/stalked relationship. The winner in a very close decision was local favorite Matt Ernst, whose disgusting love poem actually turned my stomach a little bit. Good job Matt!
Next month we will host a women only slam to choose our competitor for the Women of the World Poetry Slam, to be held in Detroit in March. We look forward to seeing you there.
In local poetry news, The annual Poetry Night in Ann Arbor will be January 18 at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater in the Michigan League at 7PM. It will feature poets from the VOLUME Youth Poetry Project, Ann Arbor Wordworks, and special guests Aracelis Girmay, and Dennis Kim (a.k.a. Denizen Kane). $7 Students (door), $5 (Advance). $12 General (door), $10 advance. Contact Jeff Kass at eyelev21@aol.com for more information or to reserve tickets.
PS – Coming to the Ann Arbor Poetry Slam in March - Jared Paul!
